This song is set at a point in a villain's story where there is no way for them to look ahead to see whether the tools they chose to use and the convictions they chose to follow will make them out to be a hero, or a villain. They are sure that the things they now put their trust in are right for them and for the world, but at the same time they are aware that their convictions are not universally accepted, which makes them apprehensive. Depending on the story, we either also don't know how they will turn out, and are apprehensive with them, or we do know (maybe because it's a character backstory spin-off set in the past) and are sad for them or defiant with them.
The song is based on two chord progressions (in A minor), Am7 G F E (think Hit the Road Jack or Feeling Good or even Let My People Go) and Dm7 Em7 Am7 (can't think of an example, but I'm sure there is a blues out there that uses it). The latter is occasionally turned into Dm7 Em7 Am7 Gm7 when I need a little extra emphasis, or drops the tonic chord to become Dm7 Em7 in bridges and endings.
